Job Title:               Inspector / Assessor

Reporting to:        Inspection Manager     

Location:               Remote (home-based), national travel may be required

Job Purpose:        We are currently seeking Inspectors to join our nationwide team to undertake and complete membership inspections, assessing workmanship against current standards and building regulations, as well as the FMB inspections policy. The role also provides the opportunity for on-site member engagement. This is a flexible and cross functional role within the FMB group, including membership services and FMB insurance. This role also provides opportunities for people who wish to work part time, flexible hours or on a self-employed basis.

Salary:                  £35,000 - £40,000 a year


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Deliver routine membership inspections for new and existing members.
  • Provide support to the Dispute Resolution Team in connection with dispute cases, as well as carrying out site inspections where this would be beneficial in resolving a case.
  • Deliver routine surveillance inspections for work on cover with FMB latent defect insurance policies, Insurance backed guarantees or claims investigations relating to a policy written by FMB Insurance.
  • Complete concise pre-formatted technical reports on works inspected and detail areas of non-compliance or works not meeting the requirements of current standards or regulatory compliance.
  • Provide guidance to members on technical building matters.

Other duties

  • Deliver the required productivity levels whilst maintaining a professional and courteous service.
  • Provide information and advice on the range of services provided by the FMB.
  • Proactively identify opportunities and sales leads ensuring details are passed to the relevant staff.
  • Keep up to date with all relevant legislation, regulations and technical documentation that apply to the work accordingly.
  • Maintain professional competence by attending training courses and updating sills as and when required.
  • Attend FMB / FMB Insurance or FMB Standard Committee meetings when required.
  • Cover the duties / responsibilities of team members when required.
  • Undertake any other duties which reasonably fall within the remit of the role

Internal:

  • Frequent with the line manager
  • Administration daily
  • Occasional with other FMB staff

  • Frequent with FMB members, clients and public consumers
  • Occasional with FMB partners and insurers

Key competencies

Essential:

  • Experience in construction site supervision or management.
  • Excellent standard of English and Maths (minimum GCSE Grade C or equivalent)
  • Computer literacy (competent use of email, Word for routine and semi-routine letters; very good working knowledge of Excel; data entry)
  • Able to develop a good understanding of the range of insurance products offered by FMB insurance and membership benefits.
  • Good report writing and analysis skills.
  • Good oral communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience having worked as a building inspector post qualification.
  • RICS Associate surveyor, CABE, CIOB or equivalent.

Skills and aptitudes

  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good customer service skills, able to deal with callers and claimants in a polite and efficient manner
  • Able to work within a small team
  • Self-sufficient whilst recognising when to refer matters

Special conditions

  • Satisfies any requirements of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
