Like many businesses, within all sectors and not just construction, costs of materials have been going up. This has been made more difficult with many merchants not holding prices for long periods of time in one case Travis Perkins only holding prices for 3 days.
The way we have dealt with this is by updating material costs at the start of the job and passing on the uplift to the client without any profit being put on top of that element.
This isn't ideal but the key way of dealing with this clear and open communication with the client. When this has been explained to clients, showing them what materials were when the project was quoted to what it is before commencing on site, it has been met with appreciation and understanding on their side.
