The project aimed to extend and remodel the property, transforming it into a charming two-bedroom holiday cottage that would serve as a focal point in the heart of the village Originally constructed as a butcher's shop using modern red brick and then became local headquarters for the Royal British Legion for over 50 years. To enhance the property, the client purchased a section of land, allowing for the construction of a single-storey rear extension with a vaulted ceiling. This enabled the creation of an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. Sufficient space was also preserved for a small rear garden and patio. A side extension was added to include a compact utility room. The project involved a complete renovation, including resizing windows, replacing the roof, and adding stone sills and heads. Given the building’s prime location at the heart of Mawdesley village, it was important to create a distinctive feature that would honour its historical significance.

The project’s goal was to design and build an extension that harmonized with the traditional style and architecture of the existing house while incorporating the modern aesthetic desired by a young family. The design incorporated a full elevation of Crittall-style doors and windows, along with a roof light, to allow ample natural light into the space. This feature seamlessly connects with a raised open balcony on the first-floor bedroom. The open-plan kitchen/living space created by the new extension was further enhanced by the installation of double pocket folding doors. These doors connect the new space to the transformed cosy, south-facing snug. Since oak is prone to significant movement over time, special attention was required at the junctions between the oak frame and the aluminium windows and doors, flexible and expandable junctions had to be engineered to accommodate the transitions between materials.

Our team retained much of the original character of the barn but introduced a complimentary pallet of modern and traditional materials: reclaimed brick and English oak, black larch cladding, exposed steel and a large framed glass entrance between the triple garage and the steel framed shippon which houses the large open plan kitchen/living area. Construction, project and cost management was undertaken by the MWB team to create this stunning home with large open spaces and an abundance of natural light. Over two floors this barn is over 5500sqft including a master bedroom, two children’s bedrooms with ensuites and mezzanine sleeping areas, two further spares bedrooms and a family bathroom. The open areas include a feature pegged oak frame and glass encased bar between the dining room and the snug lounge, a playroom, study, formal lounge and open plan kitchen living area across the full width of the rear elevation all perfect for hosting guests.

This sleek, modern, mid terrace 2-bedroom contemporary cottage was created from a disused 200-year-old open store, previously used for sheltering farm animals. MWB Residence & MWB Architecture were asked by the clients to provide Design & Build services which included all building, construction, fit out and interior specification. Opening the entire rear of the building and providing an open mono pitched extension to house the minimalist kitchen and entertaining space. On entering through the front door, you are met with the free floating, industrial style, lightweight steel, oak, and glass stair which effortlessly ties together the three floors. Open plan living to the ground floor, with snug lounge and two ensuite double bedrooms complimented with a second-floor external roof terrace, free standing bath and discreet lighting all help to provide a stunning small home.

This deceptively spacious 2600sqft detached family home, spanning three floors, combines traditional and modern elements to create an inviting 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom residence. The property represents the first open-market development by MWB, showcasing their expertise in navigating local planning regulations, with full planning permission secured in collaboration with MWBArchitecture. Originally part of a semi-detached pair of cottages, the dwelling has been transformed into an impressive standalone home, 30% larger than its predecessor. A further 50% volume increase was achieved through a two-storey side extension. The exterior features include facing brick, pitched face dressed natural stone, English oak, and natural slate. These are complemented by anthracite grey windows and black cast replica rainwater accessories. Inside, the finishes and interior design, completed by MWBArch, blend bold colours and ornate patterns to evoke a cosy, warm cottage ambiance.
