Our task was to design and build an extension that was unique in its character. Working with the client, we opted for a timber frame structure and decided that this could be on show. Both the wall and roof structure were formed from the same structural elements (American white ash) which created a visual symmetry internally. Adding the rooflights gave the interior a very light feel, which we then contrasted on the exterior with a zinc roof and a charred larch timber finish. We also added an external store to the scheme with an almost invisible door formed from the larch.

Our aim was to do away with the small kitchen and create a much larger kitchen/dining room. We were also interested in preserving as much as possible, the look of the exterior. This was done by matching materials successfully. It was important that the new space benefitted from lots of natural light so large windows and a triple glazed rooflight were added to the design. A WC was also included in the scheme as the house had only a first floor bathroom.

The aim from the outset was to be as sympathetic as possible towards the character and style that the Architect of the original house had achieved. The house was designed and built in the 1960's by a local Architect who on this development at least, favoured generous room sizes and a clean simplistic aesthetic to the interior. Rather than leaving the project having added a room or two, in this case the house ended the build with one room less than when we started. This had the desired effect of lifting the level of natural light on the ground floor and utterly transforming the way the house was used as a result. Read less

We decided along with the client that a bold modern addition to this Victorian terraced townhouse could work really well if it was kept as simple in appearance as possible. In the end, our addition made a complete change to the way the ground floor was used and the addition of large fixed roof lights and tall bespoke doors allowed light to flood in. Read less

This enabled us to bring … Read more Working from a set of Architects planning drawings, we constructed an extension to the kitchen with a steel goalpost structure supporting the roof. This enabled us to bring forward the effective building line of the property into the large rear garden. Coupled with an extensive remodelling of the entire ground floor, the property was transformed throughout. The addition of a beautiful handmade oak staircase to replace the original as well as reconfiguring the pitch of the stair resulted in a huge difference to the house. Read less
