True Build Trade Services completed this renovation to a Victorian property in Edinburgh with such proficiency and workmanship that the new seamlessly blends in with the old.
In the words of our director Paul Dempsey, this was True Build's "most challenging project yet", as all the team had to work with were the warrant drawings that the architect provided. The team had to come up with technical and inventive solutions to overcome logistical difficulties. This was partly due to the complexity of the cantilevered design, allowing for a frameless glass corner, as well as the position of the original building.
True Build began by removing the entire rear corner of the building, including 600mm thick solid stone walls, which required the full weight of the building to be supported by large beams, each weighing more than a tonne. This was made more difficult by the tight work space as using a crane was not possible; they had to be installed by hand with scaffolding, block and tackles. Twenty tonnes of stone were removed in the same manner.
The team had to adapt the design as the project went on, for example hiding the gutter to maintain the building's elegant appearance. Varying other problems cropped up, such as retaining walls, dealing with collapsed drainage pipes, and a devastating family bereavement. Taking these on in a calm and focused manner to realise the client's vision made this an outstanding project.
