The BSG carried out 15,000 site inspections during the period 1/03/2022 – 28/02/2023, and identified the two greatest threats to construction workers' health and safety as working at height and edge protection. This session will include some examples of what typically goes wrong in these instances, as well as providing feedback on subsequent prosecutions and fatalities.
Key stats
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) stats tell us that falls from height are the biggest cause of fatal injury in construction.
- 29 workers died as a result of an accident caused by working at height during 2021/22.
- Over 60% of deaths attributed to working at height involve falls from ladders, scaffolds, working platforms, roof edges and through fragile roofs.
- There were also 35,280 non-fatal accidents involving falls from height across all industry sectors which equates to 97 accidents every day.
What steps can businesses take?
Our speakers will cover where to find the correct guidance / best practice procedures, including referencing the Working at Height regulations, and the need to prepare and document suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks involved in carrying out construction work.
