Thinking of a home extension? Want to gain more indoor space but don’t want to minimise your outdoor space? We understand. It can be a challenge to work out the best way to extend your home without losing your precious garden space, but there are some clever ways in which you can get the best of both worlds…
Not only is losing your garden space frustrating but the UK is in the midst of a wildlife crisis; there has been a 19% decline in the overall wildlife numbers in the UK since the 1970s and 1 in 6 species threatened with extinction (according to research by Thomson Environmental Consultants in 2024). So the question is: how can we utilise our properties to make the most space without it being detrimental to our garden space and in turn, our British wildlife?
Work with what you’ve got indoors
Renovating and improving the spaces you’ve already got can be a great way to extend your space, so consider open space living ideas or having a huge declutter; this is an assured way of feeling like you’ve gained a lot of space. There are also lots of ways you can make your space appear bigger than it is through mirrors and using wall mounted fixtures.
A new purpose for your garage
Does your garage just sit there? Could whatever you have in there be kept in your shed? We are seeing an increasing amount of homeowners convert their garage into utility space, gym or a home office. See here for a great guide to convert your garage into a living space and not have to use a part of your garden for your home extension.
Hidden storage
Clever and practical, hidden storage is a fantastic way to gain some space. Not only does it save you money compared to a costly home extension but you won’t have to dig into your garden space.
Consider ottoman style beds, built-in wardrobes and covert door and mirror storages. Another trend we’ve seen spike is using your stairs for storage; with ideas such as putting drawers in your stairs or turning that under-stairs space into a pantry; this will afford you plenty of open spaces from the lack of space-consuming free standing storage units.
Loft conversions
If you find that it is unused, loft conversions are an excellent way to gain some space without eating in your garden space. You will need to make sure you are abiding by the development rules as the steps you need to take to get your loft conversions will need to have them considered.
Lofts are typically converted into an additional bedroom, but there is great potential for a snug, office or a cinema room! Of course, you’re free to use the space as you please, just consider it may not have a lot of natural light unless you get windows installed.
Build up, not out
Adding another storey to your house is a step up from a loft conversion, and is a great way to afford yourself a lot of space, with the only effect to your garden being a bigger shadow over it.
You will need to make sure that your house is suitable and meet requirements for such a build; this will include getting planning permission. Adding another floor adds endless opportunities to your home including more bedrooms, bathrooms and offices. It is costly and can take roughly a year from planning to completion, but if time and cost are on your side it is an excellent way to gain more space without losing garden space.
