Members who run building companies based in Lewis, Lerwick, Glasgow and Glenrothes gathered in Stirling for the first meeting of the FMB Scotland Board in 2025. It’s clear that a great value is placed on these regular meetings: given the distance some members travel and the time they choose to take away from the business.
What is the FMB Scotland Board?
Your Scotland Board is currently made up of 13 members elected by fellow Scotland-based FMB members. Led by your Scotland President Pam Wilson, the Scotland board provide insights and invaluable support and help to shape our work in Scotland.
Why did they meet in Stirling?
We have a mixture of in-person and virtual meetings: typically there are a maximum of five per year. We met in Stirling on 5 March to hear a presentation from the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) who hosted us at their offices. Stirling’s central location being another reason.
What do they discuss?
At each meeting, all board members share their feedback on a range of issues impacting their business as local building contractors. These include
- Trading conditions and general workloads in their locality
- Challenges on recruiting and retaining skilled labour
- Contractual and commercial matters
- Feedback on the FMB’s services, such as the app and our business helplines
At this meeting, the Scotland Board discussed and voted on the CITB’s consensus for 2026-2029. The FMB is a Prescribed Organisation under the levy process and must survey its members for a response. Discussions at the FMB’s Area Boards are one of the three ways the FMB is surveying its members on CITB consensus.
As for the views around Scotland for 2025, overall members reported a healthy pipeline of work but skills and labour challenges persist for all: whether the business is based in the central belt or in the Highlands and islands.
How can other members join the Scotland Board?
Every year there are vacancies on the Scotland Board, this year there are six vacancies. We will shortly be emailing members with more information on the nomination cycle and how this works in April - so watch this space.
